On Fireworks

1 Tip - on life with your dog

With Fireworks fast approaching, spare a thought for your dog; close the curtains, play calming music or white noise and have extra chews and treats available to calm them through what can be a terrifying evening.

You could also do some desensitisation ahead of time; by playing a sound track of fireworks at a low volume that doesn't cause your dog distress, then, as they become accustomed to the sounds gradually increase the volume, always go at your dog's pace so they remain calm. Pair the sounds with games and treats. Be patient and turn the volume down if they show any anxiety.

1 Idea - on the leading edge

Children love having pets, it leads to more exercise, teaches the responsibility of care and empathy for another as well as some biological ideas. A pet makes an excellent friend too. Remember always supervise babies and toddlers around dogs, kids can be confusing for a dog, with grabbing hands and squeals which may be misinterpreted as threats or play.

With every animal, you have to build its confidence around people, because people do some crazy and stupid things. Dr Ian Dunbar
