On chasing bikes

1 Tip - on life with your dog

My dog chases bikes, scooters, and kids running! What do I do?

Use a multi-strategy approach:

Strategy 1: Brain work - Feed your dogs daily meals through enrichment: scatter feeds, puzzle toys, and Kongs and in different locations. This targets their hunting drive at home, reducing the need for outdoor chasing.

Strategy 2: Routine - Walk at off-peak hours when fewer bikes and scooters are around. Early and mid-morning or late evenings.

Strategy 3: Solid Recall - Train a reliable "come", starting at home, then gradually practice in more distracting environments. Practice on every walk!

Strategy 4: Backup Plan - Carry your dog's favourite toy or ball. If a bike appears unexpectedly, call your dog back and play a game.

1 Idea - on the leading edge

Create a "Bike Alert" Game

Teach your dog that seeing bikes means good things happen. When you spot a bike in the distance, say "bike!" in a bright voice, call your dog, and reward them with treats or play. Over time, your dog will learn to look for you when bikes appear rather than chasing.

The goal isn't to suppress your dog's natural instincts, but to redirect them into appropriate outlets. Patricia McConnell, Animal Behaviorist
