1 Tip - on life with your dog
Have you ever noticed your dog lip licking or flicking their tongue when no treats are around? Sometimes, it's nothing more than a quick lick; the tongue tip is barely visible outside the mouth.
It's a calming signal that all dogs understand and use.
Here's what it might mean:
They feeling uncomfortable and trying to calm themselves, another dog or person.
They are communicating they're not a threat, often used during play with another dog or when meeting new people.
If you see a lip lick, observe the context. It could be that they are trying to calm you. Try these tips to help your dog feel more comfortable:
Slow down your movements.
Turn your body sideways to your dog.
Avoid direct eye contact.
Give your dog extra space.
Watch your dog to see if any of these help them relax.
