On rewarding your dog for coming

1 Tip - on life with your dog
Training your dog to come when called takes a lot of practice. It's helpful to move away when you call, and always reward them when they come, regardless of how long it takes. Call them often during a walk, reward them and send them off to sniff; that way, they're more likely to come readily as your call doesn't always mean the lead and the end of the walk.
1 Idea - on the leading edge
When we are out and about with our dogs, their behaviour can feel like an extension of ourselves. If they don't come, we may feel embarrassed or frustrated, and others may judge us as 'bad owners'. When they do come, we may be compelled to tell them off. Don't! If your dog takes their time but still comes, praise and reward them. That way, next time you call, they'll come quicker, cause you're a cool pet, Mum or Dad.
