On summer heat

1 Tip - on life with your dog
If you live in Auckland, you would have noticed the heat. Lucky for us, but it pays to keep a couple of things in mind. The footpaths get hot! Check by placing the back of your hand on the ground. If it's unpleasant on your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Walk on the grass, at the beach or in a shady bush area. If you are out for more than an hour, take water for your dog to drink.
1 Idea - on the leading edge
Humans sweat across their skin to cool down, whereas dogs regulate their temperature by panting and sweat a small amount through their paw pads. Excessive panting increases water loss and can lead to dehydration.
If you think your dog is suffering from dehydration, move them to a cool area, offer small amounts of water and call your vet.

Walk your dog in the morning or late evening. The heat is a killer for dogs. RSPCA.org.nz
