On barking and lunging

1 Tip - on life with your dog

Does your dog bark and lunge on walks? It's embarrassing, frustrating and sometimes hard to work out why.

The first step: before heading out, slow everything down. Spend a minute at the door, then in the garden or outside your house, dropping treats on the ground.

When your dog starts checking in with you for the next treat, it's time to walk a short distance up the street. If they pull out in front, call them with a 'this way', wait for them to look at you and walk back the other way. Repeat daily, going a little further each walk.

1 Idea - on the leading edge

Most reactive walks start too fast. Letting dogs sniff, search and check in helps them absorb the environment before they move through it. Slowing the beginning of the walk can change the emotional tone of the whole outing.
