On Boundary Barking

1 Tip - on life with your dog

A dog that barks at a boundary isn't barking at what's on the other side specifically, they're barking at the movement and because they're blocked from investigating freely to see what it is. This barrier frustration is hard to fix if the behaviour has been practiced, it becomes an automatic response. The best way to handle this is to reduce access to the fence so the behaviour can't be practiced.

1 Idea - on the leading edge

When a dog can see fully, hear fully or smell fully, they can make decisions based on an accurate picture. When these senses are restricted the picture becomes filtered and distorted. The barking and running become a habit of repetition, a combination of frustration and arousal.

f a dog practices a behaviour, it gets stronger. This is true of barking just as it is true of sit. Ian Dunbar, Before and After Getting Your Puppy
