1 Tip - on life with your dog
Want your dog to stay close and check in on off-lead walks? Try this easy reinforcement game.
This game teaches your dog that exploring is okay — and choosing to come back to you keeps the game going. Over time, you build a reliable pattern:
explore → check in → earn reward.
That creates safer off-lead behaviour without pressure.
How to play
Start in a low-distraction area (at home or garden).
Say “Find it” and toss a treat a short distance away.
Let your dog go and get it.
The moment your dog turns back toward you, mark with “yes”, and toss another reward away again.
Repeat the sequence.
1 Idea - on the leading edge
This game encourages your dog to check in with you. They learn moving away is okay — but choosing to come back starts the game again. With practice, you'll build a habit: explore → check in → earn reward. Developing safer off-lead behaviour without pressure.
Aim for enthusiastic turn-backs before increasing difficulty.
If responses slow down, make it easier for your dog by reducing the distractions.
Keep sessions short — about 5 minutes.
Aim for fast, enthusiastic turn-backs before adding difficulty.
If responses slow down, lower the distraction level.
Gradually practise in new locations once the pattern is strong.
Use a mix of low and higher-value rewards to keep engagement high.
