1 Tip - on life with your dog

Notice how your dog responds when you pat or stroke them. If they turn toward you or relax into the touch, that’s a clear “yes, please!” If they lip‑lick, turn away, or stay still, that’s a “no, thanks” Paying attention to these signals in context helps you respect your dog’s choices and emotional state.

1 Idea - on the leading edge

The safest and most respectful ways to touch your dog are a gentle rub on the shoulder or a long, slow stroke from shoulder to hip.

Pat your dog like that, then stop and watch their response.

They’ll either accept your contact or reject it. This lets your dog make the choice, and by giving them that option, you show that their decisions are understood and valued.

Over time, this strengthens trust, reduces stress, and builds a bond based on clear, two-way communication.
