How to Be the Best Supervisor for Children and Dogs

Updated: Aug 1

There are many ways that you can ensure a calm home for your babies, toddlers, and dogs.

These tips will help you, your family and your home safe for everyone.

Be an Active Supervisor every day

  1. Be fully present and engaged with your child and dog. Don't leave a baby, toddler and dog alone together. Toddlers can be scary for dogs, grabbing hands and erratic movements. Play it safe by staying around. For example: Read a book together or encourage everyone to go hang the washing out together.

  2. Actively monitor interactions, especially around tight spaces such as doorways, halls and between the couch and coffee table. A dog may find tight spaces challenging, stairways can be a challenge too. Walk the toddler through to another room or give the dog a break with some quiet time in another room. Use baby gates in doorways and playpens to create safe spaces for baby and dog.

  3. Encourage safe exploration and learning. Actively showing the dog what is expected and providing a safe space for the dog to retreat and rest. Show children how to touch and interact with your dog, always leaving a dog to eat and sleep in peace. Use baby gates in doorways to create safe spaces for baby and dog to play or rest.

REMEMBER: Some dogs may find direct eye contact challenging and tight cuddles scary and restrictive, observe your dog's body language and adjust accordingly.

  4. Keep Toys Separate: Keep your dog's and children's toys separate. Toys are exciting for toddlers and dogs, chewing a favourite toy is annoying for a toddler and a toddler taking a dog's cuddle toy can be stressful for your dog. Teach your dog and toddler which toys are theirs by using different containers, pick up regularly and reward both with a treat or playtime for following these rules.

Living with dogs and toddlers requires consistent effort and patience, it can be tiring but loads of laughs and joy when things go well.

Following these tips can create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. Building a positive and respectful relationship between your child and dog takes time and dedication. Enjoy the small wins, and don't be scared to ask for help when needed.
