1 Tip - on life with your dog
What does it take to get your dog to listen? Try taking treats on your walks and reward your dog when they look toward you. Doing this consistently builds your value more than the environment. Stopping to let your dog sniff will also build your value, and of course, using a friendly tone.
1 Idea - to think about
I have a challenge for you...try one dedicated check-in walk this week. The only rule: every time your dog voluntarily looks back at you— without being called or prompted — mark it, with a quiet "yes" and reward it—a normal walk where eye contact becomes the most rewarding thing that happens. Your dog will learn that checking in pays better than chasing every distraction, and you discover how often your dog is already trying to connect — you may not have noticed.
1 Quote - on dogs
The dog has been evolving with humans for over 15,000 years. They are exquisitely attuned to us — our emotions, our gestures, our attention. The question is rarely whether your dog wants to connect with you. It is whether you have made yourself worth connecting to. Alexandra Horowitz, Being a Dog (lightly edited)
